What No One Is Talking About: Wanting a GLP-1 Doesn't Make You Weak

Body Image, Shame, and the World We Live In

If the thought has crossed your mind lately “maybe I should just try one of those GLP-1s” and it was followed almost instantly by guilt, you're not the only one.. At Naturally You Counseling & Wellness, I don't believe wanting to change your body makes you shallow or superficial, I think it actually makes a lot of sense given the world we live in. You're living in a culture that has spent decades equating smaller with safer, and now there's an injection or pill promising to make that feel finally, effortlessly possible.

Here's what I want you to know about that desire to try it, and why piling shame on top of it isn't actually helping.

The Pressure Isn't in Your Head

Between the ads wedged into every device you have, the doctor who brings it up before you do, and friends comparing against one another, it's genuinely difficult to move through the world right now without being told, directly or indirectly, that your body is a problem to solve. Wanting relief from that pressure is real. It's a reasonable response to a culture that has rebranded thinness as "health," "wellness," and "longevity," and made it harder than ever to opt out.

Curiosity Isn't a Confession

Thinking about a GLP-1, asking questions about one, or even starting one to try to change the size of your body doesn't mean that you can’t find peace inside your body. It's actually information about something deeper, not a sign that your vain. Shame doesn't make the decision any clearer. It just adds a second, heavier layer on top of a choice that was already complicated enough.‍ ‍

What We're Actually Curious About

In sessions, my goal isn't to hand you a yes or a no on whether I think you should start a GLP-1 or not. It's to get curious with you about what's underneath the the thoughts of starting one. What do you imagine would feel different, in your body, your relationships, how you're treated, if this "worked"? Sometimes that question changes the decision. Sometimes it doesn't. Either way, the goal is for your choice to come from a grounded, informed place instead of a shame-driven one.
